Avoiding the obvious can be challenging in familiar environments.
Historic city centers, small towns, and villages have cultivated a distinctive vernacular architecture characterized by a harmonious balance of shapes and colors, a quality often lacking in contemporary constructions.
TransAmerica, driving around
My experiences living and traveling throughout the United States have exposed me to a diverse array of landscapes, as well as various types of human habitats, ranging from permanent residences to seasonal retreats in small communities and towns.
TransAmerica: Interstate 80, from Salt Lake City to Wendover.
The expansive salt lake presented a dreamlike landscape for me, reminiscent of Richard Misrach's "Desert Cantos" and Jean Baudrillard's reflections in "America." In 2017, I had the opportunity to visit Denver, where I dedicated a week to a solo road trip from Salt Lake City to Wendover. The scenery surpassed my expectations; however, Wendover proved to be an unexpected revelation. While I was familiar with the Bonneville racing field, I discovered there the newly established casinos alongside the historical military airport that served as home to B-29 bombers during World War II, including the two aircraft responsible for dropping atomic bombs on Japan. This airport and its associated military base have since been decommissioned, now housing a small museum that "celebrates" the Enola Gay and the former military installation. The town is experiencing growth, characterized by trailer parks primarily accommodating Latino workers and modest homes for more affluent residents.
City
In various locations across the United States, certain characteristics of American cities are not confined to specific areas.
